4:00 – 6:30 PM

Silverado Hermann Park

Aging without a built-in safety net? You’re not alone.

More adults than ever are aging “solo” — without a spouse or adult children nearby to step in when life gets complicated. If that’s you, this afternoon was built for you. Four trusted local experts will walk you through exactly how to protect your health, your finances, and your independence before a crisis makes the decision for you.

01

Who decides if you can’t?

Learn how to legally name the people — or professionals — who will make your medical and financial decisions if you’re ever unable to, and how to choose them wisely.

02

The documents every solo ager needs

Powers of attorney, healthcare directives, wills, and trusts — and the costly gaps most people don’t realize they have until it’s too late.

03

Help when family can’t step in

See how professional trustees and care managers can manage your finances and coordinate your care when there’s no relative to lean on.

04

Plan for care on your terms

Understand what quality memory and long-term care really looks like — and how to qualify for help paying for it without losing what you’ve built.

Andrea Zaite

A to Z Geriatric Care

MSSA, LMSW, CMC, C-ASWCM

Andrea Zaite has been a social worker for 33 years. After earning her bachelor’s degree from John Carroll University in 1985, she worked with people with disabilities at a private nonprofit to deinstitutionalize large state institutions, making independence and least-restrictive environments key concepts in the field of developmental disabilities in Ohio. During this time she earned her graduate degree in social work administration from Case Western Reserve University in 1990, which led to a manager/administrator position with the Lorain County Board of Mental Retardation and Developmental Disabilities, where she worked with mildly and severely developmentally disabled adults on vocational training — developing one of the first elder care programs for persons with disabilities.

In 2000 she moved to Texas and became administrator and principal at the Center Serving Persons with Mental Retardation’s adult day programs, school, and day care. In 2003 she shifted her focus to health care; her 15 years as a social worker in the ICU, as a hospital case manager, and as a home health social worker led her to certifications as a Grief Recovery Specialist and Care Manager, deepening her expertise in the critical, chronic health care of the elderly and developmentally disabled. Her goal is the pursuit of an independent and dignified life for those who are chronically ill, aging, and disabled — so that people can live to the best of their ability to the end of life.

Beth Hearn Owens

American National Bank & Trust

Senior Vice President & Trust Officer

As a licensed attorney and dedicated trust professional, Beth has worked in the trust and estates industry since 2004. Beth’s experience in trust and guardianship litigation allows her to problem-solve a client’s situation from a unique perspective, and her compassion helps ease clients’ financial and estate planning concerns. When Beth is not caring for her trust clients, she is chasing her two young boys around or fishing with her husband.
