Mom has Dementia; Should I Just Let Her Eat Whatever She Wants?
Kim Hegwood | February 17, 2025
Mom wants to each chocolate all day. She has dementia. Should I make her eat a healthy diet and just let her enjoy this simple pleasure?
“Because if you think about someone with dementia, the more options or the more choices or the busier, someone is going to be more confused. It’s going to get harder for them to make a decision. So, then they just won’t eat at all because there’s just too much going on. So, keep it simple. If all they need is a spoon, just put a spoon there next to the bowl. If all they need is a fork, don’t give them a fork, a spoon, and a knife.” Shonah Jefferson
Today Kim talks with Chef Shonah Jefferson with Chef’s for Seniors about this situation a lot of families struggle with. Kim will be asking
1. Why is it important to get a senior with dementia to eat a healthier diet?
2. When a senior refuses to drink water is there a way to sneak fluids in?
3. Does food presentation matter?
4. Are there healthy versions of comfort foods and do they still taste good? Can you give us some examples?
5. Mom wants to eat chocolate, ice cream, and candies all day. What can I substitute?

Bio:
Shonah Jefferson began her culinary career at the tender age of 11 – by helping her dad at his local Houston restaurant. After spending many years in business and as a practicing attorney, she returned to her culinary roots by managing the family restaurant for a few years while obtaining a degree in Culinary Arts from San Jacinto College.
Shonah has always had an interest in giving back to others because “to whom much is given, much is required.” Being a Chefs For Seniors owner and personal chef gives her an opportunity to “do well by doing good” and to combine her love of people, business, and the culinary arts. She and her team of talented chefs serve the seniors in the North and Southeast Houston Metro areas.
